Johnstone Supply Anaheim, Laguna Hills, Long Beach & Santa Ana
Welcome aboard! You’ve joined Johnstone Supply Legacy Group—a locally owned, four-branch HVAC/R distributor serving Southern California. For more than 30 years, we’ve shown up for our communities and taken exceptional care of our customers—making sure they get the right parts, right away, with real people who know the product. We’re excited you’re here!
Our Ongoing Mission:
“ To be the leading independent HVAC/R wholesaler, offering solutions and support through quality products, outstanding service, and trusted expertise—empowering our HVAC/R industry partners to succeed.”
At Johnstone Supply, you’re not just joining a company—you’re joining a family dedicated to building lasting relationships, solving problems, and keeping the industry moving forward.
Johnstone Supply was founded in 1953 in Portland, Oregon by John Shank, who opened a single store selling refrigeration parts. His vision was simple but powerful:
“Provide contractors with the parts they need, when they need them—backed by expertise and great service.”
In 1963, several independent Johnstone store owners recognized the strength in numbers and formed a member-owned cooperative.
That cooperative model—independent owners working together under one brand—remained the foundation of Johnstone Supply for more than six decades.
Over the years, Johnstone Supply grew into one of North America’s largest HVAC/R wholesale-distribution networks, with over 400+ locally owned stores and Nationwide distribution centers ensuring quick delivery and consistent inventory.
In recent years, Johnstone Supply aligned with The Redwood Group, a strategic partnership that provides enhanced resources, supply-chain strength, and national scale—without losing what made Johnstone unique.
While no longer operating as a traditional cooperative, Johnstone remains built on the same local, family-owned values that have guided us for 70+ years.
This alignment ensures that our customers and employees benefit from both local flexibility and national strength—a best-of-both-worlds approach that keeps Johnstone competitive, innovative, and customer-focused.
Despite its size, Johnstone has always stayed true to its local roots: each branch operates independently, serving its market with the flexibility and personal service of a neighborhood business.
Our story began with Hank and Carole Atwater, who laid the foundation for our Johnstone Supply family by launching the first of the San Diego branches many years ago. Their dedication to service, integrity, and relationships became the hallmark of the Atwater legacy in the HVAC industry.
Their daughters, Cathy and Karen, carried that vision forward, expanding operations and deepening community roots.
The Pritchards
Along the way, Cathy and her husband, Bob Pritchard, opened the Santa Ana branch in 1989, marking the beginning of a new chapter. Growth continued with the opening of Laguna Hills in 2006, and later the acquisition of Long Beach in 2016, extending their reach across Southern California.
When Karen chose to retire, Cathy and Karen made the decision to sell most of their locations to Johnstone Supply, LLC. However, in true entrepreneurial spirit, Cathy and Bob retained the Anaheim branch—uniting all four branches under one banner as Johnstone Supply, The Legacy Group in 2025.
Today, the third generation proudly continues the family tradition as the Legacy Group is now a 40-person, four-location operation with more than $10 million in inventory and approximately $40 million in annual sales—continuing a stellar record of almost 40 years.
Johnstone Supply – The Legacy Group
The Legacy Group represents the Southern California family of Johnstone Supply branches, including:
We remain committed to supporting Southern California’s HVAC community with reliability, expertise, and heart
We show up with respect, humility, and a genuine desire to help—serving with a servant’s heart and practicing good stewardship of our time, talent, and resources. Serving generously means we slow down enough to listen, respond with patience, and take pride in a job done right the first time. It’s holding the door for a delivery driver, walking a customer to the right aisle instead of pointing, and following through on the small promises that build big trust.
In practice, this looks like clear communication, courteous problem-solving, and ownership when things go sideways. We do what’s right even when no one is watching—protecting customer data, handling materials safely, and honoring commitments even when it’s inconvenient. Grace shows up in our tone, our timelines, and our attention to detail.
How you’ll see it day-to-day:
We pursue outcomes that create lasting value for our customers, vendors, employees, and our community. We believe true partnerships mean everyone wins—when we listen first, act with integrity, and focus on shared goals. Partnered Success means we think long-term: we recommend the right solution (not just the quickest sale), share market insights, and collaborate with vendors to keep shelves stocked and pricing competitive.
Inside the company, it means fair expectations and investing in our people so they can grow. In our community, it means being a reliable neighbor—supporting local programs, hiring responsibly, and operating safely and sustainably.
How you’ll see it day-to-day:
We do our best work together. Candid, respectful collaboration makes us stronger—iron sharpening iron—so we solve problems faster and serve better. Teamwork at Legacy Group means we assume positive intent, share knowledge freely, and ask for help early. We celebrate cross-branch assists, welcome diverse viewpoints, and keep egos out of the way of great outcomes.
Teamwork also means building clear, simple processes that anyone on the team can run—and then continuously improving those processes so they scale. When one of us learns, all of us level up.
How you’ll see it day-to-day:
At the Legacy Group, our Core Values guide everything we do—how we serve our customers, support one another, and strengthen our community. We believe in Serving Generously, showing humility, respect, and care in every interaction. We strive for Partnered Success, creating lasting wins for our customers, vendors, employees, and the neighborhoods we call home. And we Encourage Teamwork, knowing that collaboration, communication, and shared purpose make us stronger together.
These Core Values reflect who we are: a family-driven business committed to integrity, excellence, and people first.
